Woodford Co Homemakers

The presence of the Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association dates back to as early as 1912. An organization rich in the culture and heritage of our state, it is closely tied to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension service, specifically Family and Consumer Sciences.

We are a volunteer organization and work to improve the quality of life for families and communities through leadership development and education in cooperation with the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.

When you hear the term “homemaker” you might have a very rigid definition of what the title describes. You will likely be surprised to learn about the membership, value and impact of this active organization. Kentucky Homemakers began as the first link between the farm and home. While maintaining that link through community education on topics such as food preservation, clothing conservation, health and safety, it has also expanded and evolved tremendously.

Homemaker club members include people with a variety of backgrounds including single individuals working a full time job outside the home, to full time stay at home moms, to retirees. Homemakers give back to their communities through service projects, non-profit fundraisers, donations and college scholarships. We expand our impact for the greater good by supporting international outreach and raising money for the Ovarian Cancer Fund.

The work of Homemakers has expanded as much as the topics of focus. Today Homemakers are involved in cultural arts, heritage cooking and craft skills, community economic development, foods and nutrition, public health, energy and environment, housing and family economics.

The Woodford County Homemakers is an organization of over 130 members living within Woodford County, Kentucky. We are the local outreach of the Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association, Inc.

There are 10 active homemaker clubs in Woodford County.

Clubs hold a business meeting once per month to discuss items of importance, and for event and service project planning. All clubs come together once per year for a county annual meeting. There is an area-wide meeting each year which includes homemakers from eight counties in the Fort Harrod Area. Club and county officers have additional meeting opportunities.

Not only do we take care of important business at our meetings, but they are full of fun and networking as well. You’ll get to know individuals with similar interests, share skills and give back to Woodford County!

Woodford County Homemakers have special projects of focus throughout the year. Some of the current projects include:

Backpack Project – Homemakers collect school supplies to fill backpacks which are distributed to students in need.

Scholarship Fund – Fundraising efforts by county Homemakers contribute to two $1000 college scholarships for Woodford Co high school students - Sarah T. Feltner Memorial Scholarship and the Jenny Carr 4-H Scholarship.

Secret Santa – Over 30 years strong, this event takes place the first Saturday in December. Homemakers provide inexpensive crafts for children to purchase as gifts for family and friends. Funds raised support service projects and scholarships.

Food Pantry – Each month Homemaker clubs collect food and non-perishable items and deliver them to the local food pantry.
